Best Restaurants -(Brunch)
1886 Buffalo Cafe
(Restaurants - Brunch)
187 Barclay Parade SW
Calgary AB T2P 4R5
403-269-9255
Description:
Named for the year its building was constructed, this breakfast eatery has enjoyed a long and successful career and is still going strong. Even though the restaurant has remained in the same place for its entire run, the surrounding neighborhood was transformed in the interim. The wood-framed building began as part of a lumber company and now rests in the middle of an eclectic shopping center. One thing that hasn't changed through the years is the popularity of the food. Breakfast is hot and filling, and portions are large. Business folk clamor for the omelets, scrambled eggs, and other traditional dishes, along with lighter options, such as yogurt. Coffee is fresh and steaming, a no-nonsense wake-me-up to jumpstart the day.

Arden
(Restaurants - Brunch)
1112 17th Ave SW
Calgary AB T2T 0B4
403-228-2821
Description:
For those times when nothing else but comfort food will do, this is the place to be. The diner, owned in part by Juno award recipient Jann Arden, serves up all those dishes that you eschew as a child and come to crave so frequently as an adult. The mac-and-cheese gets high marks for its creamy goodness, and the hot sandwiches are warm and filling. You'll also find meatloaf and sloppy joes, those school-night staples that Mom could throw together without too much trouble. The interior is diner-style but with more upscale touches, like original artwork and subtle colors. Good anytime you get a hunger pang for nostalgia.

Cajun Charlie's
(Restaurants - Brunch)
200 Barclay Parade SW
Calgary AB T2P 4R5
403-233-8101
Description:
High ceilings, bold colors, and the stir of ceiling fans you'll almost think you're down in the Big Easy. The spicy decor is only a prelude to the meal, which is most certainly centered around the regional favorites that have made New Orleans cuisine such a big hit. Blues and jazz set the mood, compounding the Southern flair that everything in the restaurant attempts to establish. The menu is zesty and flavorful, just as you've come to expect. You'll be delighted to sample a well-filled po' boy or dig into rich, chunky jambalayas and gumbos. The food is judiciously seasoned, perfect for those who crave Cajun cuisine and those who are in the mood to give it a go.

Ed's Restaurant
(Restaurants - Brunch)
202 17th Ave SE
Calgary AB T2G 1H4
403-262-3500
Description:
Marked by a turret, this Victorian-styled building houses one of the city's favorite places for steaks, buffalo wings, and business lunches. Ed's has five small dining rooms in the circa-1911 home, and all sport lovely furnishings and enjoy great light. A variety of soups and salads is available, as are gourmet burgers and hot and cold sandwiches. You'll also find prime rib, filet mignon, salmon, lobster, and chicken. The house pastas are delicious as well and include penne Creole as well as tortellini Madagascar, which features spinach and mushrooms in a peppercorn sauce. An outdoor patio allows patrons to enjoy the warm weather, and Ed's offers audiovisual equipment for groups who schedule midday meetings.

Nellie's Breaks the Fast Cafe
(Restaurants - Brunch)
516 9th Ave SW
Calgary AB T2P 1L4
403-265-5071
Description:
Breakfast is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, an assertion that Nellie's heartily upholds. The cafe serves breakfast all day, allowing patrons to enjoy a variety of classic dishes whenever they choose. If you're in the mood for something sweet, try pancakes or waffles slathered with butter and syrup (or with fresh fruit, if you must). Savory dishes include corned beef hash, omelets, and breakfast burritos. On Sundays, the offerings become a bit more exotic. Representative dishes include a seaside omelet and a selection of heartier dishes. The eatery also offers sandwiches if you arrive around midday and want something more standard.
