Best Restaurants -(Latin American)
Mescalero
(Restaurants - Latin American)
1315 1st St SWCalgary AB T2R 0V5 403-266-3339
Description:
What began as a restaurant is now an entire complex, composed of restaurant, bar, shop, and nightclub. However, it's not a Disney-esque enterprise but an authentic, tasteful excursion into the American southwest. In an historic building, the restaurant boasts tiled floors, stuccoed walls in earthy shades, and distressed iron accents. It's a truthful, if upscale, representation of the area, not a theme-restaurant interpretation. The food, too, is authentic. A tapas menu and a regular menu both sport dishes with zesty flavors, whether they come from chilies and herbs or the smoky goodness of the apple-wood grill. Steaks, duck breast, ribs, lamb, and salmon all make appearances, as does paella. To enrich the ambience, there's also an outdoor patio and terrific margaritas. A definite don't-miss.
The Conga Room*
(Restaurants - Latin American)
109 8th Ave SWCalgary AB T2P 1B4 403-262-7248
Description:
This Latin restaurant devotes itself to the rich, earthy cuisine from south of the border. The high-ceilinged space is set with leather seats and an array of weathered wood and wrought iron pieces. They're an ideal complement to the savory food, which includes grilled chicken with corn tamales, beef empanadas, panchu (beef rolled in cilantro and grilled), and ribs glazed with tamarind sauce. The house black bean soup is incredible, as is the homemade chorizo sausage. For a real treat, try the signature dish: In the style of Brazilian churrascarias, several meats are grilled and served on a long skewer, all with a dramatic flair. You'd also be remiss not to try the tapas menu, the light desserts, or the homemade sangria. It's all good.
